Grid/Scan Lines

This is a common tutorial that teaches how to put in grid or scan lines. However, this one uses Blending Options and some Feathering (via the Eraser tool) to make the effect more smooth.

Prerequisites

Please know how to do the following before using this tutorial.

Tutorial

  1. Open the image of your choice, and make a New Layer New Layer on top of it. (You can also go to Layer >> New >> Layer or hit Ctrl + Shift + N.)

  2. On a separate canvas, make the pattern you want to use as described in the pattern tutorial. I will be using the same pattern created in that tutorial.

  3. Fill the top layer with the pattern (Edit >> Fill).

It should look like this now.

  4. Because of how distracting it looks, let's blend it in better with Blending Options (on the Layers window or in Layer >> Layer Style >> Blending Options). Overlay or Soft Light usually works well. I will be using an Overlay.

    Now it looks like this.

  5. It still looks somewhat distracting because important parts of the image is covered. Select the Eraser tool Eraser, and use a large airbrush-type brush (one that is faded on the edges).

  6. Erase some parts of the grid pattern.

And here is how mine turned out. I always like to let the face show through, and then take away a few other parts to break up the pattern a bit.
